Star-Lord Renamed His Ship – and It’s Absolutely Heartbreaking

After suffering horrific events that remind him of a past tragedy in Wastelanders: Star-Lord #1, Peter Quill renames his ship in memory of a friend.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Wastelanders: Star-Lord, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Wastelanders: Star-Lord (by Rich Douek, Brent Peeples, Cris Peter, and VC’s Cory Petit) revisits the Star-Lord of the grim and gritty universe first introduced in the “Old Man Logan” storyline. In this universe, the villains teamed up and wiped out nearly all of the world’s superheroes, and the world became divided into territories. Old Man Quill (by Ethan Sacks and Robert Gill) followed this world’s version of Star-Lord, who left Earth to be the emperor of the galactic Spartax Empire and thus wasn’t around when the heroes of Earth were slaughtered. Wastelanders: Star-Lord shows how Peter Quill copes with the guilt he feels about abandoning his allies. He renames his spaceship, the Milano, as a way to honor one of the heroes he failed to save, a hero with whom he had also been romantically involved in the past: Kitty Pryde.

While Viv Vision is repairing the Milano, Quill visits the ruins of the X-Men mansion to pay his respects to Kitty and the other departed X-Men. There, he sees a vision of Kitty, who leads him deeper into the mansion. Visions of the X-Men and other superheroes of Earth confront Quill, condemning him for striving to protect his empire instead of fighting alongside his allies on Earth.

The Shadow King reveals himself as the creator of these visions and offers to place Quill in a memory of when he and Kitty were happy together. Though Quill still mourns Kitty and the other heroes, particularly his deceased former teammates on the Guardians of the Galaxy, he rejects the oblivion the Shadow King offers and destroys him.

After the Milano is repaired, Quill tells Viv that he first named the ship after a girl he had a crush on, long before he knew what love really meant. He then decides to rename it the Pryde, in memory of Kitty.

Although Quill comes to the X-Men Mansion with feelings of guilt and regret, he leaves with the understanding that he did what he had to and there is no use wallowing in self-pity. His encounter with the Shadow King and the illusions of Kitty and the other deceased heroes allows Quill to come to terms with his past actions and gain closure so that he can move on with his life. He knows that the best way to honor Kitty’s memory is to not give in to his regrets but to keep fighting, because it’s what she would have wanted him to do.

Quill’s decision to rename his ship the Pryde demonstrates his acceptance of what has happened. Rather than trying to run from the tragedy, Quill acknowledges Kitty’s death and allows her memory to strengthen and motivate him rather than weigh him down. It also shows how much Quill has grown and changed since he first acquired his spaceship. Back then, he didn’t know what love truly was. His relationship with Kitty taught him about love and acceptance. Although Kitty may be gone, her memory still lingers, and the Pryde‘s new name is a touching tribute to the woman who meant so much to Star-Lord.
