Star For a Night – Roshni Patel – Merstham Park School

Star For a Night is an opportunity for young children to get experience as performers run by the council. It is a performance that has been taking place at our local theatre for over twenty years. It is a free chance to get ten weeks of rehearsal with professional teachers and have two days to perform what you have practised. The show usually takes place in the Easter holidays. It is split into three parts: singing, dancing and acting and you can audition for one. The teachers for each category also give out a year’s scholarships for the club that they run separately.

I have been participating in this for the past three years, the first time I chose to do acting. It was great, there were many group activities and the leader took what we had made and used it in the script. This year, I won one of the scholarships to the teacher’s drama club and I still go there. The next year, I chose to do singing however after a few rehearsals, it got cancelled due to coronavirus. Last year, during the summer they decided to bring it back and continue where we left off. It was a great show and I now go to the singing teacher’s new glee club. It is now going to be my fourth year and I recently auditioned for dance. I have had two rehearsals so far and it is going well.

I met my friend, Molly, the first time I did Star for a Night and we have been doing it together every year since. She said “When I think about Star for a Night I think it’s a very good place to build and express yourself, make new friends, grow confidence when performing and meet new people. You get to perform and have fun!”

Star For a Night is a great way to improve your confidence as a performer, get top training and meet great people. To this day, I am still friends with a few people that I have met. This has truly changed my life for the better and let me grow and blossom as a performer. I recommend this to anyone who wants to get on a stage.
