Stacey Dooley follows Ukrainians training with British Army for war in new show
The BBC has announced a one-off documentary which will see Stacey Dooley following a group of Ukrainian civilians as they arrive into the UK and train with the British Army to equip themselves for war.
In Stacey Dooley: Ready For War? the 36-year-old will get to know the recruits as they endure five weeks of rigorous training, which will prepare them for deployment to the frontline of their home country in the fight against Russia.
Among the young characters the new mum meets along the way are florist and gardener Mykola, and welder Pasha, who both explain their back stories and their reasons for, and worries about, going to war.
Speaking about the recruits, Stacey said: ‘These raw recruits go through one of the most relentless training programmes the British Army has ever devised.
‘The Ukrainian men I came to know over a few short weeks were incredibly impressive.
‘I think of them every day and hope their training will keep them alive.’
According to the BBC, the hour-long BBC Three and iPlayer documentary had ‘exclusive and unprecedented access’ to the British Army’s ‘training mission’.
In the training, the broadcaster said recruits ‘learn to survive and to be lethal’, as they prepare for life on the frontline.
Clare Sillery, BBC Head of Commissioning, Documentaries said: ‘This film delivers first time access to the British army’s intense training programme for Ukrainian civilians and offers a unique insight into how young people prepare to be frontline soldiers.
‘Stacey’s ability to grapple with the emotional and psychological challenges they face during this process is why she continues to be so popular with viewers.’
Executive Producer for True Vision, Brian Woods, praised Stacey for her ‘talent for forging powerful connections with everyone she meets’.
This comes after the beloved documentary maker welcomed her first child with Strictly Come Dancing’s Kevin Clifton, 39, in January.
The pair named their first daughter Minnie, and it wasn’t long before Stacey returned to work just a month after giving birth.
