SSLC Result 2022: Wheelchair-bound girl clears exam – Times of India

MANGALURU: A wheel-chair bound girl, who has not attended offline classes from the past two years, due to Covid-19, as well as the death of her father, and suffering from the medical condition ‘spina bafida’ (meningomyelocele) scored 363 out of 625 marks in the SSLC exam.

Fathima Hania Samah, a student of Ansar English Medium School, Bajpe, is suffering from the condition since birth, and as a result, she requires a wheelchair to move around.

Her mother Aysha, a teacher at Ansar English Medium School, told TOI that her daughter was born with a birth defect. Despite her physical shortcomings, she was eager to study. She scored above 75% till class VIII. “However, her studies were affected in the last two years, due to the pandemic. She attended online classes, but it was not of much help. Therefore, she studied on her own for two years, including for the SSLC exam. She never attended a single SSLC class in person, but prepared by borrowing old notes and books from her friends. When everything was going smoothly, she lost her father in October, due to a heart attack, which was another blow to her studies. However, she mustered the courage and prepared for her examination. She was able to score 363 marks, despite not going to school,” she said.

Fathima said that she has not yet made any plans to continue her studies.

Jayashree G S, the head of the school, said that in order to help Fathima, her classes were always held on the ground floor of the school. Her mother, who is also a teacher in the same school, used to come in an autorickshaw, and later Fathima was taken in wheel-chair for classes. She was not able to attend classes for the past two years due to Covid-19, and the SSLC classroom was shifted to the upper floor. As a result Fathima was unable to attend offline classes.

Sudhakar K, DDPI, Dakshina Kannada, said that he noticed the girl sitting alone in a wheelchair and writing examinations, without the help of a scribe at St Joseph PU College, Bajpe, a SSLC exam centre.
