Spider-Woman Just Revealed How Close Marvel’s Heroes Really Are
Spider-Woman has just discovered how powerful trusting in those closest to her can be, and it proves just how much stronger Marvel’s street level heroes are than its Avengers.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Spider-Woman #19, available now from Marvel.
The heroes of the Marvel Universe have fought alongside one another for decades, and in all that time some truly remarkable relationships have been forged. While the likes of Captain America and Iron Man can safely call themselves compatriots or even friends, the world’s foremost heroes still haven’t managed to cultivate the same sort of closeness that Marvel’s street level heroes have. In fact, it is that sense of familiarity that has just put an end to the latest threat to Spider-Woman’s family in the most wholesome way imaginable.
Jessica Drew has finally come face-to-face with Queen Veranke, the Skrull imposter who tore her life to pieces during the events of Secret Invasion. Now Veranke has returned from the dead to continue terrorizing Spider-Woman, even going so far as to assume her identity once more and kidnap Jessica’s infant son Gerry. Once the titular hero has caught up with her enemy in the pages of Spider-Woman #19 by Karla Pacheco, Pere Perez, Frank D’Armata, and VC’s Travis Lanham, neither Veranke nor Gerry are anywhere in sight. At least, not until Captain Marvel flies down with Gerry in her arms, just before another Carol Danvers shows up to make things even more complicated. The sight of two Carols is too much for Jessica to keep up with, though thankfully there is one person who knows exactly which Captain Marvel is the real one, and all it takes is a little zap-zap to reveal the truth.
In spite of the fact that Jessica herself couldn’t tell the difference between the real Captain Marvel and her imposter, young Gerry Drew has no such problem. While there is something to be said about a child’s intuition, Gerry immediately recognizing Veranke as “Bad Cawol” speaks to just how close Marvel’s street level heroes truly are. Carol isn’t just Jessica’s friend, she is a part of the family, and she isn’t the only one. Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Matt Murdock, and a slew of other heroes who call New York City their home have come to know one another in a way that the likes of the Avengers never really have.
Earth’s Mightiest Heroes have frequently found themselves at odds with their own teammates, even outside of groundbreaking events such as Civil War. Tony Stark himself is currently facing the repercussions of taking on the role of a cosmic god, while T’Challa is dealing with the fallout of having his own secret army strewn across the globe. Even Shang-Chi, who has long been a stalwart champion of justice, can’t keep his fellow Avengers from questioning his every move since taking control of the Five Weapons Society once controlled by his villainous father. When it comes to the likes of Jessica Drew, however, there are few if any situations which would have them at each other’s throats, at least without some serious hesitation along the way.
The Avengers might be Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, but they are far from its most human. No matter what powers or abilities Marvel’s street level heroes may have, none of them have forgotten what it is like to be a person just trying to eek out a decent life in the wild world they inhabit. And, at the core of all of those relationships, is trust. Jessica Drew’s faith in her friends, and her family, is precisely what has gotten her through her worst moments, just as their faith in her has brought her back from the brink more than once. That kind of faith isn’t a superpower on its own, but it is clearly just as important.
