Spider-Man: No Way Home Trailer Recreated Using ’90 Animated Series Footage

A new fan-made mash-up of the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer using footage from the 1990s Spider-Man animated series has gone viral on social media.

The fan reaction to the teaser trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home has been staggering, blowing away the previous viewership records for a trailer that was held by Avengers: Endgame since 2018 and being mentioned more online in half a day than Endgame‘s previous record of online mentions had in a full day. That interest in the trailer has also led to a brilliant fan-made recreation of the trailer using footage from the 1990s Spider-Man animated series also going viral.

Brendan Borrow, of the YouTube channel, 100Bombs Studios, did a meticulous pairing of the No Way Home trailer with footage of the Spider-Man cartoon series that ran from 1994-1998 and stared Christopher Daniel Barnes as Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

The major episode used for the trailer was the Season 3 episode “The Sins of the Fathers, Chapter I: Doctor Strange,” where Doctor Strange was voiced by the late, great John Vernon (Vernon is perhaps best known for the Dean in National Lampoon’s Animal House). However, other episodes that were prominently used for the trailer include the early take on the idea of the Spider-Verse in “Spider-Wars Chapter II: Farewell, Spider-Man” (Spider-Man writer and producer John Semper notably believes that he deserves credit for the Spider-Verse concept due to his work with Spider-Man and the multiverse on the 1990s Spider-Man series) and the series finale of Spider-Man.

Of course, a notable difference between the Spider-Man movies and the 1990s Spider-Man cartoon is that Peter Parker’s girlfriend, MJ, in the movies is Michelle Jones rather than Mary Jane Watson, so obviously the original “MJ” took the place of Michelle for the scenes in the mash-up (the same thing happened with Harry Osborn from the cartoon taking the place of Peter’s friend Ned from the movies when the trailer mentions Spider-Man’s friends being in danger).

Amusingly, just like how Spider-Man: No Way Home has outdone Avengers: Endgame in terms of trailer views and online mentions, it has also become Borrow’s most viral YouTube mash-up. Previously, 100Bombs Studios’ biggest viral video was a similar mash-up trailer of the Avengers: Endgame trailer using footage from the Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes cartoon series.

That 2019 video had almost 420,000 views while the Spider-Man mash-up is almost at 480,000 and still counting.
