Spider-Man Defeated the Sinister Six for Good In Marvel Zombies’ Darkest Fight

The Sinister Six that populated the dark world of Marvel Zombies did not stand a chance against a brutal, zombified version of Spider-Man.

One of the unspoken laws of superheroes is that the good guys always show a certain amount of restraint in dealing with their enemies. This gives them the chance to return down the line while showcasing the kinder side of the heroes. But there are variants across the multiverse who lack those elements — and they can take down their enemies once and for all with brutal efficiency.

The zombified Spider-Man (introduced in Marvel Zombies #1 by Robert Kirkman and Sean Phillips) eventually came up against a Silver Age-style incarnation of the Sinister Six in Marvel Zombies Returns (by Fred Van Lente and Nick Dragotta), and dispatched them in terribly gory fashion.

Marvel Zombies Spider-Man Sinister Six 2

In the original Marvel Zombies, perhaps the most sympathetic of the undead former heroes was Spider-Man. After being one of the early victims of the virus, he lost control and consumed his Aunt May and his wife Mary Jane. The act traumatized Peter and led him to never take off his mask again if he could avoid it. Although he still takes part in the slaughter and consumption of others, he tends to be visibly distressed whenever he briefly regains control of his mind. In Marvel Zombies 2, he and Luke Cage defect from the other cosmically-empowered zombies and work to help protect the remnants of humanity on Earth, and is among the undead teleported to another reality by the son of Malcolm Cortez.

In Marvel Zombies Returns, the zombified heroes are revealed to have landed on Earth-91126 (aka Earth-Z), and the zombified Spider-Man believes he can find a way to remove the zombie virus by finding the Lifeline Tablet. However, he is distracted by an attack from the Sinister Six — namely Doctor Octopus, Electro, Mysterio, Vulture, Kraven, and Sandman. Spider-Man swings into action but Kraven’s scent (amplified by the herbs he’d consumed to increase his skills as a tracker and fighter) enticed the undead wall-crawler. Despite his best attempts to control his hunger, the zombie Spider-Man attacked Kraven, savagely biting into his neck as the rest of the Sinister Six watched in horror.

Mysterio tried to overwhelm Spider-Man with illusions, but the web-slinger’s senses allowed him to track down the villain and unceremoniously dispose of him as well. Electro and Doctor Octopus both tried to attack Spider-Man at the same time, but only opened themselves up to hit each other — leaving Electro drained of power while Doctor Octopus was left more or less “cooked” for the zombie to consume. Before Vulture could escape, his wings were ripped from his body (along with his arms) and used to finish Electro before he could shoot another blast of electricity. Only the Sandman was able to escape the carnage, and he proceeded to find and kill his world’s Spider-Man, believing the innocent wall-crawler to have been the one responsible for the brutal murders.

While the Spider-Zombie is distracted, the villains rise from the dead and consume the local population — including Harry Osborn, Mary Jane Watson, and Gwen Stacy. The enraged zombified Spider-Man then slaughtered the undead crowd of villains as well as the supporting characters that are traditionally associated with Peter Parker. While this was Spider-Man’s most ruthless and decisive victory over the Sinister Six, it also came at a high price. But it was those deaths that ended up playing a part in convincing this Spider-Man to try and ultimately redeem himself — setting up his role in eventually destroying the Marvel Zombies on this world at the cost of his own life.
