Approached by Variety at the premiere of his Apple TV+ show The Crowded Room, actor Tom Holland confirmed that while talks about Spider-Man 4 had officially begun, they’re bringing them to a halt in solidarity with the writers who are currently on the picket lines.
Holland wouldn’t reveal much about the next chapter in Spider-Man’s story, but he did confirm that discussions had started right before the ongoing writers’ strike: “I can’t talk about that, but I can say that we have been having meetings. We’ve put the meetings on pause in solidarity with the writers,” he said.
Holland’s update came on the heels of comments Sony exec Amy Pascal made at the Across the Spider-Verse premiere on Wednesday.
“Are we going to make another movie? Of course we are,” she told Variety. “We’re in the process, but the writers strike, nobody is working during the strike. We’re all being supporters and whenever they get themselves together, we’ll get started.”
Previously, in an interview with EW back in February, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige said their writers had just begun “putting pen to paper” on Spider-Man 4.
Holland has portrayed the MCU’s version of Spider-Man/Peter Parker since 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, which saw Tony Stark recruiting the young superhero for a big mission. In the years since, his take on the iconic web-slinger has become an Avenger, turned to dust (“Mr. Stark, I don’t feel so good”), un-Blipped, and saved the multiverse. Holland most recently donned the costume in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which IGN’s Amelia Emberwing awarded an 8/10.
The WGA strike officially started on May 2 and has shown no signs of letting up. Spider-Man 4 does not yet have a release date.
