Spencer Dinwiddie: Ref called me ‘bitcha– motherf–ker’ to teammates after tech

Mavericks guard Spencer Dinwiddie was hit with a technical foul during the second quarter of the Mavericks’ eventual win over the Raptors on Friday, but he was bothered more by what veteran referee Tony Brothers allegedly said about him to his teammates afterward.

“If you watch the games, and I know that’s what refs are supposed to do, you’ll see I clap to get the attention of my teammates, things of that nature, so it was nothing personal,” Dinwiddie said after the game of the technical foul before making a stunning allegation against the longtime official.

“As a man, I would like to say I’m sorry, first and foremost,” Dinwiddie continued. “And secondarily, I would like to say not only would I like my money back, but I would like to not be called a ‘bitcha– mother–ker’ to my teammates.”

Brothers wasn’t made available to a pool reporter after the game, according to the NBA, because those requests are only granted for rules clarifications, per reporter Marc Stein.

The technical foul was issued on Dinwiddie, a former Net who was shipped to Washington in 2021 and then the Mavericks last February, with 47.8 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Dinwiddie said he might have used profanity while protesting the call but said he did not do so in a derogatory manner.

“If there is anybody that feels that way about me, not going to name any names, they can address me personally, face to face, because no swear words were used in the direction of anybody, personally,” Dinwiddie said. “It was like ‘Hey, that wasn’t a take foul’ or ‘That wasn’t a f–king take foul’ or something like that.

“It wasn’t anything personal, so, NBA, I would definitely like my money back and I would appreciate no fine at all for this monologue.”

Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said the team would look into the incident.

“When you look at Tony and what he’s done in this league, he’s well-liked and also one of the best that we have,” Kidd said of Brothers, a 29-year vet who is one of the longest tenured refs in the NBA. “We’re going to see what happened here and talk to Spencer and find out exactly what happened. That’s a sensitive topic. We’ll see what happens.”
