Spanish quiz show apologises for asking cost of cocaine
The producers of a popular Spanish quiz show have apologised after asking contestants to guess the street price for one gram of cocaine.
The show Atrapame Se Podes, which translates to Catch Me If You Can, asked two contestants to guess whether a gram of the class A drug costs €6 (£5) or €60 (£50).
The quiz show sees contestants take part in several rounds of topical questions for the chance to win up to €25,000 (£21k).
The contestants were asked: ‘Cal é o prezo medio de 1 gramo de cocaína na rúa?’ which translates from Galician to English as ‘What is the price of one gram of cocaine in the street?’
Despite initial hesitation, the contestants together picked the correct answer of €60.
The host of the quiz show, Paco Lodeiro, swiftly segued any awkwardness as he joked that the scriptwriters had a ‘policeman friend’ who would know the answer, before confirming the contestants were correct.
However, the show’s producers later added that the question should not have been asked, and issued an apology for trivialising drug addiction.
The producers also added that the question was created using information from a health ministry report on drugs.
The state-run TVG channel that aired the show said: ‘It wasn’t the intention of the programme to disparage the serious problem of drug addiction.’
The episode aired in the northern region of Galacia in Spain which has become known for being one of the main drug smuggling gateways into Europe from South America, as featured in Netflix’s Cocaine Coast (a series about drug smuggling in Galicia).
Lodeiro has been a familiar face on Galician television since the 90s, and has hosted the Galician edition of Atrapame Se Podes (which has been released in other parts of Spain from 2013 onwards) since 2021.
