Spain’s best expat destinations for Britons in 2022 – ‘buzzy but relaxed’

An estimated 360,000 Britons live in sunny Spain, with many more visiting for a couple of months during the winter. Many of the most popular destinations are by the coast.

Malaga and Costa del Sol

It’s not hard to see why the region of Malaga is one of the best Spanish destinations for British expats.

Fantastic weather, award winning beaches and a cheaper way of life, Malaga has “everything to offer” according to one expat.

Ranked the second best city in the world for expats in the InterNations Expat City Rankings, foreigners in the city of Malaga say it is very easy to make friends.

Although it is one of the more expensive destinations on the Costa del Sol, many expats choose to settle near Marbella.

One visitor on Tripadvisor, Pisces2022, said: “Marbella is a very buzzy but relaxed town situated on the coast.”

Golf fans will find plenty of courses to try in Marbella while the city also has great shopping options.

In the wider Costa del Sol region, Fuengirola, Mija, Alhaurin el Grande and Torremolinos are fantastic expat spots.

Party loving Britons will love the vibrant nightlife scene in Torremolinos while families can enjoy safe and beautiful beaches in Fuengirola.

DON’T MISS

Alicante

The heart of Spain’s Costa Blanca, Alicante is popular with both British tourists and expats.

Alicante has the highest percentage of foreign residents in Spain, so newcomers will quickly be welcomed into a large expat community.

The most popular areas for British expats in Alicante include Benidorm, Orihuela or Torevieja, all of which are close to beaches.

San Fulgencio is a small village in Alicante where over 70 percent of residents are of foreign origin.

British expat Darren Parmenter told Express.co.uk he believes the lifestyle in San Fulgencio has “prolonged” many Britons’ lives.

The Balearic Islands

Rightmove data found that Mallorca was the most Googled second home destination in 2021.

The gorgeous island is the most popular destination in the Balearics with British expats and has many stunning beaches.

Expats could also consider settling on the island of Menorca or even Ibiza if they’re looking for more of a buzz.

Property can be expensive in the most popular areas of the island but is very affordable outside tourist areas.
