Sorry, Bitewing Fans – Nightwing’s Pup Won’t Help Dick Fight Crime
Nightwing writer Tom Taylor says that Dick Grayson’s dog, “Bitewing,” will not be suiting up to fight crime in the new Batman event this fall.
Nightwing fans may be disappointed to learn that Dick Grayson’s new puppy Haley, or “Bitewing,” will not be joining the hero during his crime-fighting escapades.
During the Batman: Fear State discussion panel held online for Comic-Con@Home 2021, Nightwing writer Tom Taylor was asked if the dog would be suiting up to help the Bat-Family take on the Magistrate in the upcoming event this fall. Since the character’s introduction at the start of Taylor’s run on the book, readers have already formed a close attachment to the little pup (especially since they got to name her) and cannot get enough of her. However, the writer responded with a solid “No” to answer the question and reasoned that the world of crime-fighting is no place for the hero’s new companion.
“I’m not bringing a puppy to that, to Gotham during this [Batman: Fear State],” Taylor said. “No one would bring a puppy into that.” The event has been cooking within the pages of Batman for some time, with Scarecrow using scare tactics to bring the city to absolute hysteria all while a tech mogul seeks to install his own police force, the Peacekeepers, to control Gotham. More has been happening in the city in other titles as well, such as the hunting of citizens accused of being Joker sympathizers, bombing attacks, new and returning villains and more.
Taylor feels that Dick Grayson would never have a dog deal with all of that. “Dick is a responsible, new doggy dad,” he said, claiming that the hero would ensure that Haley is well taken care of while he goes out to help the rest of the Bat-Family. “He leaves Bitewing with a neighbor and their children quickly take Bitewing and promise that they’ll look after it better than their goldfish.”
Nightwing will begin to cross over with the Fear State event starting with Nightwing #84. It will be written by Taylor with art from Robbi Rodriguez, cover art by Bruno Redondo and variant covers by Kael Ngu and Jamal Campbell. The issue is set to release on Sept. 21, with more Fear State tie-ins afterward.
