An electronics giant has created a new offshoot to take on established brands ranging from Toyota to Tesla with its bold new vehicles.
The electronics giant has established a new offshoot named Sony Mobility Inc that could make its Sony Vision S electric cars a reality.
The brand’s president, Kenichiro Yoshida, told reporters at the Consumer Electronics Show it is “exploring a commercial launch” of its own electric cars.
The brand unveiled a new Vision S 02 concept car at CES in Las Vegas.
The seven-seat SUV shapes up as an alternative to BMW’s iX, the Mercedes-Benz EQC and Tesla Model X.
As with the sedan Sony unveiled in 2020, the seven-seat SUV promises best-in-class infotainment connectivity including individual “Bravia” displays throughout the cabin, and the ability for gamers to access home PlayStation titles on the road.
Speakers mounted within the seats promise more impressive audio than existing production cars.
Sony says its digital camera expertise also translates to world-class safety and driver assistance features.
The brand’s first concept car was originally touted as a rolling sales demonstration of technologies available to established manufacturers, but Sony looks increasingly likely to offer its cars directly to the public.
Technical specs surrounding the vehicles are scarce. We don’t know exactly how much the cars will cost or how far they will travel, only that powerful 400kW motors should deliver impressive acceleration.
