Sony’s PS5 hardware plans are stupid and dangerous – Reader’s Feature
A reader is worried that Sony is wasting their time making new consoles and hardware devices that people don’t need and can’t afford.
We’ve had a lot of hardware news recently. Lots on the Switch 2, which I’m surprised to see might still be a possibility for this year. Perhaps it shouldn’t seem odd though as it has been a long time since the launch of the Switch and Nintendo haven’t announced a new game in a while. What is far more out of left field though is all this talk about new Sony hardware. Endless new hardware, apparently, all of which sounds expensive and none of which seems to be accompanied by any talk of new games.
So there are four rumours: a new model of PlayStation 5 that may or may not be a slim redesign and comes with a detachable disc drive (or the option to add one later), the PS5 Pro, a portable for remote play, and the PlayStation 6.
Oddly, the most believable one, the slim redesign, is the only one that only has one source, but everyone seems to think the PS5 Pro is coming at some point and two of the two insiders (mostly) agree on the portable. But I don’t agree with any of it and I don’t understand why it’s happening.
I don’t know about you, but it took me some time to get the money together for the PlayStation 5. It’s not cheap and I had to sell my PlayStation 4 and make some savings. As far as I was concerned the stock problems weren’t really an issue, because it took me that long to save up for it.
So, as you can imagine, there wasn’t any chance of me paying even more for a PlayStation VR2 and nor is there much chance of me getting a PS5 Pro – especially if it’s out next year and the only thing it does is make 4K and 60fps easier (could we not have something new at least? And no, 8K doesn’t count).
And this portable thing… maybe I’m living in a bubble, but I have never heard of anyone using remote play. In fact, I’ve barely heard of remote play at all, and had to double check what it actually meant when the news first came out. I cannot believe I am the only one in this situation and yet Sony wants to make an expensive portable just for that? Are they crazy?
It seems like Sony has carefully examined the current situation, in terms of inflation and the cost of living crisis and done exactly the opposite thing that makes sense. Assuming the PS5 Pro comes out next year exactly how much are they expecting people to spend on PlayStation 5 hardware in the last four years? It’s the best part of two grand as far as I can see.
This is just madness. And all the time they haven’t announced a new game since I don’t know when. Oh, and that expensive PlayStation VR2? They had one game at launch and haven’t announced anything since. Never mind Microsoft and Call Of Duty, it’s this insane hardware plan that’s going to do Sony really damage.
I know they’re all rumours, but does anyone think they’re not true? Maybe they’ll see sense and drop the portable one, at least, but I bet the rumours are true in that they’re at least thinking about.
Sony needs to stop antagonising Microsoft and Activision, stop wasting time with expensive hardware no one can afford, and just get on and make some games. That’s why the PlayStation 4 did well, not because it had an expensive VR headset.
I’m really beginning to worry about Sony and if all this hardware is on the way I think this is a dangerous time for them, where they’re poised to make some major mistakes they might not be able to recover from.
