Sony Japan Denies Report on PS4, PS5 Consoles Production in 2022

Sony Japan just denied one of the biggest reports that had dropped this week regarding PS5 and PS4 consoles production.

Everything started with a report from Bloomberg published on January 12, 2022. The reported cited an anonymous insider source, stating that Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) initially planed to discontinue PS4 production at the end of 2021.

As you already know, PS5 is in short supply due to the pandemic and a worldwide shortage of components. Most notably semiconductors. The report from Bloomberg explained that due to this shortage of PS5s, Sony decided to keep making PS4s in 2022. With an increase of around 1 million units. However, Sony has now denied this report with a new statement.

Sony denies report claiming it planned to end PS4 production in 2021

Contacted by Japanese site Gigazine, Sony denied the report from Bloomberg, claiming it “never planned to end PS4 production in the first place”.

As a side note, Sony did stop making all but one PS4 model in Japan a few months ago to focus on PS5 production. And the PS4 Pro was discontinued in September 2020 in Japan. Right now the only PS4 model still being produced is the standard black 500 GB model.

Despite being in short supply, or perhaps thanks to how rare it is, PS5 sold over 7.8 units by March 31, 2021. Surpassing the first year sales of the PS4 . Personally speaking, I don’t own a PS5 yet as I don’t see the need for it especially when niche studios making niche Japanese games won’t release PS5 exclusives anytime soon.

What do you guys think of all this, did Sony really plan to stop making PS4s and is now trying to save face? Or was the insider wrong in the first place? Tell us in the comments below.
