Sonny Bill Williams is taking Paul Gallen’s seconds again
Sonny Bill Williams appears to have a couple of prerequisites for his boxing opponents – they have to be in their 40s and former foes of Paul Gallen.
The retired NRL star is reportedly lining up his next fight against 48-year-old former UFC heavyweight contender Mark Hunt, who lost a six-rounder to Gallen on points in 2020.
The Daily Telegraph’s Buzz Rothfield broke the news on Saturday night, reporting Williams had been forced to take the fight after negotiations for a long-awaited bout against Gallen “fell over”.
Williams (9-0) has had two fights since relaunching his career in the ring after retiring from footy, winning a decision against Waikato Felefehi a year ago before emphatically finishing Barry Hall in under two minutes in March this year.
Hall, 45, was fighting professionally for just the second time after splitting a draw with Gallen in 2019.
Boxing fans — and Williams — will hope Hunt can produce some of the fireworks he managed in an entertaining outing against Gallen.
The heavy hitter who fought for a UFC title after an impressive kickboxing career landed some big shots before being outworked by the former Sharks skipper.
Williams’ express finish of Hall was widely seen as a farce as the age gap proved far too wide for the former AFL star to bridge.
Williams, 36, is 12 years younger than Hunt.
