Sonic the Hedgehog Once Teamed Up With Robotnik to Kill His Dad

After his father was turned evil because of an experiment gone wrong, Sonic and Robotnik teamed up to kill Sonic’s dad with a giant robot.

Sonic the Hedgehog and Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik have been deadly enemies since they debuted in the first Sonic the Hedgehog game in 1991. Pretty much every Sonic game and comic since then has featured the two facing off against each other in some way or another. But Sonic and alternate universe Robotnik once teamed up to kill Sonic’s mutated dad with a giant robot.

Sonic Super Special was a short run of Sonic comics published by Archie comics that took place in the same continuity as the original Sonic the Hedgehog comics. The Super Specials often had two or more different stories in them and explored alternate universes, called “Zones.” In the second story of Sonic Super Special #12 by Ken Penders, Karl Bollers, Dan Slott, James Fry, Nelson Ribeiro, Andrew Pepoy, Jim Amash, Jeff Powell, Vickie Williams, Josh Ray, and Aimee Ray, “Zone Wars: Giant Robotno,” Sonic was teleported to an alternate universe by a “Zone Cop” after dealing with an evil version of Sally Acorn, called Sallactor.

Sonic was met by a gigantic, mutated version of Bunnie called Rabbot-Zilla. He used his incredible speed to melt the street under him, trapping her in the tar. The citizens of Kintopolis and their ruler Kintobor earnestly thanked him for his help. Sonic was shocked to see that the ruler of Kintopolis looked exactly like his arch enemy, Dr. Robotnik. Kintobor apologetically explained that he had developed a Robo-Virus to halt the giants from attacking the city, but it had not worked against Rabbot. He pointed to a previous victim at the edge of the city, who Sonic identified as his uncle Chuck.

Blaming himself for everything, Kintobor explained that he once tried to harness the energy of a Chaos Emerald by splitting it, choosing to test it on Knothole Island. The fallout from the experiment mutated the local wildlife. Afterwards, the mutated wildlife started attacking the city. Kintobor developed a series of robots to defeat them but the only energy sources powerful enough to fuel them were the Half-Emeralds left on Knothole Island. Sonic volunteered to uses his super speed to power the Giant Robotno and grab the emerald pieces. Kintobor asked Sonic what his alternate Zone counterpart had done to make Sonic hate him so much. The hedgehog explained how Robotnik killed his friends and family. Kintobor apologized, but Sonic brushed him off and flew to Knothole Island.

Sonic Fight Jules

On the island, Sonic was greeted by mutated versions of Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Rotor, and Sally. He beats them all handily but feels the emotional strain of fighting his best friends. Once he beat all of them, he was horrified to see a mutated version of his father Jules with one of the Half-Emeralds embedded in his chest. Sonic realized he could not bring himself to fight his father and tried to flee. As he ran, Sonic instinctively ripped the Half-Emerald from his father’s chest, killing him. He fled the island while screaming, overcome with anguish. Meanwhile, a mutated version of Sonic with the other Half-Emerald crept over from the woods and screamed as he held his father’s dead body. Back in Kintopolis, the citizens and Kintobor threw the upset Sonic a parade to thank him for his help. While Kintobor was telling Sonic he would name their new protector after him, the Zone Cop appeared to take Sonic back to his home universe. The Zone Cop congratulated Sonic, but Sonic lashed out at him, asking how he knew he would be able to do the right thing when it meant killing his dad. In response, the Zone cop revealed he was an alternate Sonic, called Zonic. Zonic apologized and left Sonic alone with his thoughts.

Out of all the enemies Sonic has faced, Robotnik has always held a special place in Sonic’s rogues gallery. Even though Robotnik has terrorized Sonic for years, Sonic dropped everything to help Kintobor and the citizens of Kintopolis, showing how heroic he can be when duty calls.
