Solskjaer reveals one Man Utd star stunned him in training before Spurs win
The Red Devils were under serious pressure this week after the 5-0 battering from Liverpool last Sunday and were in desperate need of a victory when they travelled to north London.
Cavani had started just one Premier League game this season before Saturday night, but he worked his way back into the starting XI with the finest training performance that his manager has seen in years.
The Uruguayan scored the the second goal of the game, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford also netting and Solskjaer was delighted that his experienced players did the job for him.
‘The experience came through,’ Solskjaer told Sky Sports. ‘I was told it’s the oldest team I’ve picked for Man United and it was time for it, put it that way.
‘I’ve been here more or less three years now as a manager and Tuesday’s training performance by Edinson Cavani is probably the best performance anyone has put in to a training session here. The old men led from the front.’
It was the first time that Cavani and Ronaldo had played up front together, as Solskjaer changed formation to a 5-3-2 as he looked to play to the Portuguese superstar’s strenghts.
It worked well, with the 36-year-old scoring and then setting up the 34-year-old’s goal and now the manager wants the younger players in the squad to learn from the veterans.
‘They play well together,’ said Solskjaer. ‘They have loads of respect for each other, of course.
‘We’ve got loads and loads of talented players and to learn from those two, they’ve got to learn as quick as they can because the quality and work rate they put in is second to none.’
Manchester United rise to fifth in the table with the morale-boosting win ahead of the Manchester derby next weekend.
