Smokey Robinson divulges year-long affair with Diana Ross

Smokey Robinson, 83, catapulted to fame in the 1960s as part of the iconic group The Miracles, which garnered Motown’s first million-selling hit record and was the first Motown group to hit number one on the R&B singles chart.

However, as Smokey and The Miracles were skyrocketing to stardom, so was Diana Ross, 79, as part of the equally notorious girl group The Supremes.

The Cruisin’ singer claimed their paths collided more than once during their decades at the top of the charts.

In a new interview, the legendary singer claimed he had an affair with Diana for “about a year” while he was married to his first wife Claudette Rogers, 80.

Smokey and Claudette were married from 1959 until 1986 and the singer claims that, at the time of his romance with Diana, she was also wed.

Diana and her first husband, Robert Silberstein, were a bit more short-lived, lasting just six years before they split in 1977.

She married her second husband Arne Naess in 1985.

He told The Guardian: “(Diana and I) were working together and it just happened. But it was beautiful. I wasn’t going after her and she wasn’t going after me.”

Smokey gushed over the “beautiful lady” adding that decades later he still loves Diana and regards her as “one of my closest people”.

The Baby Come Close singer also claimed he was the one who introduced the Grammy winner to Motown during their affair.

However, Diana put a stop to their salacious romance as Smokey recalled: “Diana said to me she couldn’t do that because she knew Claudette.

“She knew I still loved my wife, and I did. I loved my wife very much.”

Smokey claims that as he grew older and wiser, he realised people put unnecessary restraints on love claiming: “We are capable of loving more than one person at the same time.

“It’s not because one person isn’t worthy or they don’t live up to what you expect – it has to do with feelings.

“If we could control love, nobody would love anybody.”
