Sleeping Dogs Movie Shooting Could Start in 2022: Donnie Yen
Ip Man star Donnie Yen has shared an update on the Sleeping Dogs movie adaptation that he has been trying to get off the ground for many years, saying that it could start shooting as early as next year.
Speaking to Collider while promoting his upcoming film, Raging Fire, Yen said that he is hopeful for production to begin soon on the video game adaptation.
“I’m still hopeful,” said Yen. “I mean, every day they tell me it’s going to happen. I’m co-producing and collaborating with [producers] Neil Moritz and Toby [Ascher], with their company, and currently talking with a couple of big platforms. And they tell me every single day it’s going to happen, so we’ll see. Like I said, I believe in destiny. So, if it’s going to happen, hopefully, it will happen the first half of next year.”
Yen then went on to talk about how he got introduced to the game, which was through a producer on his 2014 feature Iceman.
“[O]ne of the producers came to me and said, “Oh, you know, Donnie, I saw this game. This game is perfect,” he said. “[H]e showed me the cover, and the guy actually looked a little like what I did in my other films, right? And I looked at some of the clips, the way they fight. ‘Hey, there’s some of my moves.’ And then I did some research, and I found some article saying that…the people who created this game, created a world, they’re fans of mine. They pretty much borrowed some of my actions, and even the image.”
When asked about how closely the film will follow the events and characters of the game, Yen said that it will likely be a “a modern, updated version of Sleeping Dogs.”
Sleeping Dogs’ film adaptation has been stuck in development hell for over four years now, but with the recent success of video game adaptations like Sonic The Hedgehog , Tomb Raider (2013) and Detective Pikachu, it looks like the now defunct United Front Games’ classic may yet be seen on the big screen.
Sleeping Dogs came out on the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles in 2012, with a remastered version releasing on the PS4 and Xbox One in 2014.
