Sky TV alert issued to users, ignore it and you may lose key features

‌A big change is taking place later this month and some Sky users will need to act fast if they don’t want to lose key features. The satellite telly company has confirmed that it will be ending support for one of its apps and those who don’t switch to something new will see the end up of updates, new features and useful functionality.

The service that’s being shut down is the ageing Sky+ app which will be sent to the history books from May 31. After that date, this application – which boasted some 2 million users at its peak – will no longer be supported by Sky. That means bug fixes won’t be released and certain features will be switched off including Channel Favourites which will no longer be available. Favourites in the app’s TV Guide page will also no longer be displayed or work correctly.

Sky has promised that the app will still work after May 2023 but the company can’t guarantee its reliability or safety.

“Customers who continue to use the Sky+ app after May 31st will see a reduction in the features they can use, and content curation will stop,” Sky confirmed in a community blog post.

“Sky+ box connectivity features will continue to function unofficially, however if customers experience issues we are unable to provide support or fixes.”

Although that’s bad news for Sky+ users, there is a pretty simple solution.

The Sky Go app, which replaces Sky+, features live and on-demand content along with boxsets and movies which can be downloaded and viewed on the move.

So, if you still have Sky+ it might be worth making the switch to something new if you want all the latest and greatest features.

Explaining why it made the decision Sky added: “We always aim to support the most up-to-date, secure and high-performing technology – the age of the Sky+ app on iOS and Android means that the services used are out of date and cannot be continued or improved in the existing app.”
