Sky Sports annoy customers with F1 own goal after chaotic Aus GP

Sky Sports have left some customers frustrated after fans accidentally found out who won the Australian Grand Prix as they tuned in to watch highlights of the race on the F1 channel. Sky Sports F1 had scheduled an Australian Grand Prix replay to air at 9.30am for viewers who didn’t wake up early to watch the race live.

But, viewers were handed a surprise after realising live coverage had not ended when they tuned in. As fans turned over to the channel, pundits talked excitedly about Max Verstappen’s win.

Due to two red flags, the Grand Prix did not end until 8.30am meaning Sky Sports were still airing post-race analysis as the scheduled replay show began. However, this infuriated fans who accused the broadcaster of ruining the result of one of the most chaotic races in years.

Dozens of supporters vented their anger on social media after being caught out. @ryanbeard2012 said: “Sky Sports F1 have completely failed this morning. Avoided media to not see the result and end up seeing it when turning on the replay.”

@novemberflush88 added: “Why is Sky Sports F1 showing us what happened in the race, at the time that the replay is meant to be on?! Ffs. thanks for spoiling it.”

@J_Cotts stressed: “Just turned @SkySportsF1 on at 9.30am for the Australian F1 Grand Prix Replay to see a full montage of the race and all that’s went on. Well that’s f***ing useful!! Cheers.” @paul_atkin7 was also left annoyed as he claimed the channel should have done more to avoid the mix-up.

He commented: “Sky Sports F1 ruining the fans day by having the damn results chatter of the race on screen at the time when the replay of the race is on. Schedule properly. Nobody like the after chat anyway!! (sic).” Meanwhile, @Swift__Girl shared the views of many who wished they had set their alarms earlier to watch as it happened.

She posted: “I knew I should have got up at 5.30am for the #AusGP live… I just turned on the “replay” on Sky Sports and saw a 3 minute recap of whole race, the eventual winner and the safety car incidents. Seems like a very eventful GP! I’m mostly annoyed at myself for not getting up in time to watch it live.”

Verstappen secured his second win of the season in an action-packed Australian Grand Prix. The Dutchman was passed by both Mercedes cars at the start of the race but retook the lead after a red flag and held on until the end.

The victory ensured Verstappen heads to the Azerbaijan Grand Prix with a 15-point lead over team-mate Sergio Perez.

After being contacted by Express Sport, Sky Sports have confirmed they will look into the matter
