Sir Paul McCartney ‘to become oldest Glastonbury headliner ever’
The Beatles legend is said to have signed on the dotted line to headline the Pyramid Stage at the Somerset festival in June, alongside Billie Eilish and Kendrick Lamar who were previously confirmed.
According to The Sun, Sir Paul, 79, will grace the stage on Saturday just a week after his 80th birthday on June 18, making him the oldest Glastonbury headliner in history.
A source told the publication: ‘Paul’s set will be an absolutely must-see. He is really excited for it and is determined to put on a hell of a show packed with all of the hits.
‘He is feeling really ready to get back out on the road in the US and then will be raring to tackle Glasto when he gets back.’
They added: ‘There was some discussion about whether he should go ahead with shows this year because of the situation with Covid, but he decided he really wants to perform.’
Last week, Sir Paul released a teaser promoting his Paul McCartney Got Back tour, which will see him trek across the US between April to mid-June, wrapping up two weeks before Glastonbury.
The music icon last headlined Worthy Farm 18 years ago in 2004, alongside Oasis and Muse on the bill.
Sir Paul was due to perform at Glastonbury in 2020 but the event was pulled due to the Covid outbreak.
His addition to the 2022 line-up comes after reports that Taylor Swift, who was also on the bill two years ago, ‘politely declined’ an offer to play the famous festival this year, despite much of the previous line-up rolling over.
An insider claimed: ‘Taylor politely declined when she was approached because the timing just isn’t right at the moment. She isn’t ruling out an appearance in the future, though, which Swifties can get excited about.
‘Of course she would absolutely love to headline at some point. It is still on her bucket list but performing isn’t her priority right now.’
The insider added that the Blank Space hitmaker was focusing on re-recording her old albums.
Metro.co.uk understands Taylor was never booked to take part in Glastonbury 2022.
Glastonbury 2022 takes place between June 22-26 with Diana Ross set to perform in the Sunday legends slot.
Metro.co.uk has reached out to Sir Paul’s reps and Glastonbury for comment.
