Sir Keir Starmer’s Beergate the same as No10 parties, says Sadiq Khan
SIR Keir Starmer’s Beergate gathering was the same as Downing Street parties, Labour’s Mayor of London said yesterday.
Sadiq Khan said it was “a fair point to say there is equivalence” between PM Boris Johnson’s birthday party, for which he was fined, and Labour’s curry night in Durham.
Labour fear police are waiting for local elections to end before announcing an investigation.
Speaking on TalkTV Mr Khan said: “If there was one occasion where an incident happened in Downing Street I think it’s a fair point to say there is equivalence.
“We now know, though, there were many occasions and a culture versus one occasion having a beer and a curry at the end of a campaigning day.”
Durham police said on Wednesday they were “considering” calls to probe the gathering in April last year.
The Labour leader spent the last week stonewalling questions about the event.
The Sun revealed this week staffers spent £200 on biryanis, bhuna and tikkas and washed it down with San Miguel lager.
Sir Keir eventually admitted sharing a lockdown curry with up to 30 Labour officials at a time when buffets were banned.
It came days after the party were forced to admit deputy leader Angela Rayner was also there despite initially denying she attended.
Sir Keir repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and said they all got back to work after.
