In the first set a Sinner shot was called out but the 21-year-old challenged and replays showed his shot was in.

Veljovic ordered the point to be replayed but when a similar incident happened in the second set, and Galan was successful with a challenge, she awarded the Colombian the point.

That provoked a reaction from Sinner who challenged Veljovic, despite the fact he had failed to return Galan’s serve, which was initially called out.

Sinnik appeared exasperated as he stretched out his arms, with the Court One crowd jeering his protests.

That did not deter the youngster who walked up to Veljovic to discuss the issue, before some sections of the crowd booed.

Sinner held up his racket to apologise and although he lost the game, he came from behind to claim the set after winning four games in a row.

After the match Sinner apologised for his behaviour, admitting he allowed his emotion to get the better of him.

He told the BBC: “I did apologise to the crowd. Sorry again guys. Usually I’m quite calm but sometimes it happens. From my side there was some tough calls. It happens.

“I try to stay in the present moment, Sometimes players get a little bit frustrated. It is the sport.”

Fans were taken aback with one describing the dispute as the “fiercest battle at Wimbledon”.

Another added: “Can’t recall Sinner ever arguing that much with an umpire before.”

And a third said: “The line calls at this Wimbledon have been shockingly poor. Don’t blame Sinner at all. He is absolutely in the right to complain.”

Sinner is now in the Wimbledon quarter-final for the second successive year where he will face Roman Safiullin.
