Singer and actress Jane Birkin dies as fans share their heartbreak
Jane Birkin has died at the age of 76, French media have reported.
Jane, who lent her name to the Hermes Birkin designer handbag, was found dead at her home by her caregiver on Sunday, according to BFMTV.
The actress and singer’s cause of death is not yet known.
The English-French star rose to fame as an actress and was also known for her relationship with French singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg.
The stars first met when they appeared in French comedy Slogan, before releasing a joint album that same year.
The famous couple split in 1980.
Jane and her ex Serge sparked controversy after performing the French duet Je T’aime… Moi Non Plus.
The 1968 song was banned in the UK over its examination of sexual ambiguity.
It was also condemned by the Vatican, but still went on to achieve success worldwide.
Jane previously told CNN in 2006: “He and I became the most famous of couples in that strange way because of ‘Je t’aime’ and because we stuck together for 13 years and he went on being my friend until the day he died.
“Who could ask for more?” The star added.
“So Paris became my home. I’ve been adopted here. They like my accent,” she said.
Jane previously battled Leukemia back in 2002, and went on to suffer a stroke in 2021.
In the aftermath of her stroke, Jane had to cancel several concerts she had planned that same year.
Jane sadly had to drop out of performances scheduled last March after breaking her shoulder blade.
Fans took to Twitter to pay tribute to the icon, with one fan writing: “RIP Jane Birkin, the original fashion muse.”
Another added: “rest in peace jane birkin, you will be so missed angel.”
