Simon Cowell’s brother diagnosed with cancer last year as star extremely upset

Tony Cowell last night opened up for the first time about his cancer diagnosis.

The 73-year-old was told he had stage 2 bladder cancer last year, with Simon Cowell becoming “Mr Helpful”.

The Britain’s Got Talent judge’s older sibling is now in remission after undergoing an operation and chemotherapy.

The 63-year-old is said to have offered to “sort out” Tony’s care, but he told him there was no need.

However, the television regular still insisted on speaking to his consultant.

In a new interview with The Sun, author and journalist Tony recalled telling Simon his concerning health news.

He said: “I could hear he [Simon] was extremely upset — I had to calm him down.

“He then switched and became Mr Helpful.”

Tony broke the news over the phone to Simon in Los Angeles.

His brother first sought medical help after returning from a trip to Greece with his wife, Emma, 46.

The day after his holiday, Tony found blood in his urine.

“I went straight to my GP, who said it was a sign of bladder cancer. I didn’t know what to say to Emma or my son Luke,” he added.

Emma was writing her now-released novel, The House in the Olive Grove, at the time, which features a character with cancer.

“It is so deeply ironic then that a week later we were those characters,” she said.

Simon is from a big family, with a younger brother, Nicholas, three half-siblings – John, Tony and Michael – and a half-sister, June.

Tony, his brothers and sister are from Simon’s father’s first marriage.

The former co-wrote Simon’s autobiography, I Don’t Mean to be Rude, but…, and has appeared as a pundit on TV.

Tony also joined the music mogul to celebrate his Hollywood star back in 2018.
