SILVER! GB cap off most successful Olympic Games in the pool with men’s 4x100m relay
USA broke the world record to hold off the Brits in a dazzling display. The British team – Luke Greenbank, Adam Peaty, James Guy and Duncan Scott – broke the European record time, finishing in three minutes and 27.51 seconds.
It means Great Britain sit third in the overall medal table for swimming with four golds, three silvers and one bronze.
And Duncan Scott became Great Britain’s most decorated Olympian at a single Games, achieving four medals.
GB’s previous best tally in swimming was seven medals at the London Games 113 years ago.
Scott, 24, claimed gold in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay and silver in the men’s 200m freestyle race.
He also took silver in the men’s 200 metre individual medley.
Greenbank, 23, won bronze in the 200m backstroke.
He finished the first leg of the relay in seventh. Adam Peaty leapt into the pool for the second leg with an incredible showing, swimming a breaststroke split of 56.53s to take GB into the gold medal position.
Guy, 25, swam his butterfly third leg in a creditable 50.27s – but was overtaken by the the unstoppable Caeleb Dressel, 24, of the USA.
Zach Apple, 24, swam the final leg with Duncan Scott in hot pursuit.
GB and USA finished way ahead of their competitors – with Italy claiming bronze.
Scott’s three silvers and one gold means also means he has six Olympic medals overall.
Only Bradley Wiggins, Chris Hoy and Jason Kenny have won more.
