Sidcup drama school blasted for £11k ‘Mickey Mouse’ course in ‘queer performance’
Rose Bruford College, in Burnt Oak Lane, plans to charge £11,000 for the 15-month course which could start in September 2023.
It is described by the college as “the first and only MA of its kind” which will focus on queer performance.
It will offer training in a range of queer performance practices, delivered by renowned queer artists, theatre-makers, academics, and researchers.
The course welcomes all students with an interest in making performances, or as a researcher, critic, facilitator, or producer.
Conor Holohan, campaign manager at the Taxpayers’ Alliance, told The Telegraph, the degree would fail to offer young people “the skills needed in the job market”.
He added: “Far too many Brits are taking up Mickey Mouse courses like these with few economic prospects.”
A spokesperson for Rose Bruford College said queer qerformance is a research-led course that incorporates training in interdisciplinary performance practice alongside other modes of learning and teaching.
It added that the course allows students to explore and develop their own unique practice in a safe and creative space.
The course will be broken up into four modules, which include, “Thinking Queerly”, “Creatures of the Night”, “Queer Dramaturgies” and an independent research project.
The Common-Sense Group of Tory MPs warns the degree would be a “waste of money,” as reported by Mail Online.
Sir John Hayes, who heads the group, said: “Danny LaRue, Paul O’Grady, and my particular favourite Barry Humphries didn’t need a degree to know how to dress and perform as a woman.”
The “hybrid” course will also cost £18,000 for any international students wanting to study the degree.
The full statement from Rose Bruford College says: “Queer Performance is a research-led course that incorporates training in interdisciplinary performance practice alongside other modes of learning and teaching, appropriate to masters level education.
“The course encompasses diverse forms of queer performance, allowing students to explore and develop their own unique practice in a safe, creative space.
“As with all educational courses in the arts, Rose Bruford strives to provide students with the best teaching, training and support, whilst also seeking to provide the best prospects for employment after graduation for its past, present and future students.”
