Shubman Gill fined 115% of his match fees. Here’s why
Indian opening batter Shubman Gill has been fined 15 percent of his match fees for showing dissent over third umpire’s decision in the World Test Championship Final on Saturday. The young Indian batter was found in breach of Level 1 of the International Cricket Council’s Code of Conduct. In addition to that, the Indian team has also been fined 100 percent of their match fees for slow over-rate while the Australian team have been fined 80 percent of their match fees.
In a statement informing about the decision to fine Shubman Gill, ICC wrote, “Gill was found to have breached Article 2.7 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to public criticism of, or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an international match.”
“The incident occurred after the fourth day’s play when Gill criticised the umpiring decision for his dismissal in the second innings of the match on social media.” the international cricketing body added
It was Shubman Gill’s first offence in the 24-month period and 1 disciplinary point has also been added to his record.
The incident occurred during the second innings of the World Test Championship Final when Gill was batting on a score of 18. In the 4th over of Scott Bolland’s spell, Gill nicked a ball that flew to Cameron Green at Gully. Green’s reaction suggested he had taken the catch but the replays suggested that the ball may have in fact touched the ground. Third Umpire Richard Kettleborough sided with Green and declared Shubman Gill out.
While Shubman Gill’s dismissal had caused a stir among fans and former cricketers, he has also commented on the controversial catch. In an Instagram story on Saturday, Gill posted a screengrab of Cameron Green taking the controversial catch with the ‘clapping emoji’.
In essence, Gill has lost 115 per cent of his match fee; 100 per cent for the slow over rate and 15 per cent for disagreeing with the third umpire’s decision.
