As education has continued to rapidly improve, it has become more apparent that schools are beginning to neglect their duty to children and young adults. The leaps and bounds schools have made have provided the opportunity for the best sex education seen in years, and an improved understanding of the threats drugs possess, it has become more apparent that people are leaving school unaware of what is truly needed in the real world.
Firstly, education now does not accommodate those from households unaware of how to consistently prepare and budget for healthy meals. Basic cookery skills are something that should be prioritised and awareness of how to create the basis for many dishes. Instead of focusing on enforcing quadratic formulas and the importance of electronic bonds, schools should focus on compulsory domestic lessons that will help students prepare for their futures without the help of their carers.
Students should also be more aware of the importance of textiles. The simple act of closing a hole in a shirt is something many students find difficult if not shown how to by a carer or member of staff. While Textiles is a compulsory subject in many schools for a short period of time, hand-stitches are frequently ignored. Instead of making many throw away clothing, students could learn how to save clothes and protect them from landfills.
Taxes are also a problem many face once they have left full-time education. To learn what is actually important for personal finances, students would have to take full courses of Business Studies or Economics to understand the complex nature of the economy. While most problems solved with tax are automatically removed though pay cheques, those destined to be self-employed have no preparation for the difficulties ahead.
Fundamentally, the education system should accommodate for the abandonment in teaching life skills throughout a student’s education. Only teaching this important skill for a few months at most is not acceptable and is only setting some up for struggle in their future lives. Consistent education of these skills should have the same importance as STEM and English Literature. While something is taught, it is not enough and more needs to be done.
