We’re well versed in the benefits of using a serum on your skin, but how many of us have trialled the benefits of a tooth serum?
Stick with us here – this might not just be another beauty fad.
We asked a top dentist for their opinion on whether an enamel serum – such as as MySweetSmile’s Enamel Care Serum (£24.99) – is a good addition to our dental routine and the response was as glowing as we hope our teeth to be.
‘Enamel serum containing nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA) is one of the biggest advancements in dental home care,’ Dr Peta Leigh, an award-winning Aesthetic and Restorative Dentist at Elleven Dental in London, told us.
‘It works by providing tooth enamel with nHA, which is the mineral normally found in healthy tooth structure, but dissolved away in acidic environments.
‘Fluoride, like nHA also rapidly absorbs into demineralised tooth surfaces but the difference is nHA will restore the enamel to its original form, and the results are clinically proven and well documented.’
According to MySweetSmile, its serum contains a concentrated formula powered by nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA), FYI.
Sensitive teeth are often a result of weak tooth enamel, meaning enamel serum is a great option for anyone looking to tackle sensitivity and strengthen their teeth.
‘It’s ideal for those with sensitive teeth, enamel erosion or at a higher caries risk,’ Dr Leigh told us.
So what’s the best way to use enamel serum? Like a facial serum, it’s an effective add-on to our usual routine that will pay dividends.
‘Enamel serum can be used in addition to regular toothpaste, alongside calcium-based toothpastes, or as a standalone treatment,’ Dr Leigh explains.
‘It should be used at a separate time to regular tooth brushing for best results.’
In theory, enamel serum sounds like a great addition. But what do the reviews say? While shoppers claimed it took a little bit of time to notice the difference, on the whole, reviews for this serum were very positive.
‘The serum for strengthening enamel and reducing sensitivity. Excellent. Took about a week but started to notice a reduction in sensitivity,’ said one happy shopper.
While another user said: ‘After my first use saw difference..can’t wait for the results going on further..highly recommended.’
A third wrote that ‘after week I could see an improvement in my teeth’ as another noted that while it was ‘an expensive serum’ it was ‘worth every penny to be able to enjoy a hot cuppa again’.
Another mused: ‘I use it just like my toothpaste once a week, and I can visibly see brighter teeth and far less pain.’
As a final word, our expert would always recommend doing your research first, though, as with any new tooth product.
‘Please always read the label on any product and follow the guidelines to get the optimal results out of any treatment,’ Dr Leigh explains.
She also notes: ‘nHA products may be attractive to those wishing to limit their fluoride exposure but can safely be used alongside flouride.’
