Shohei Ohtani narrowly avoids getting struck by foul ball in Angels scare

Shohei Ohtani is roughly half a year away from getting what will likely be the largest contract in MLB history, and the Angels are trying to finally make the playoffs in order to persuade the impending free agent to stay.

All parties avoided a potential nightmare Monday night that would’ve seen their season go up in smoke.

Ohtani, the two-way phenomenon, narrowly avoided getting drilled by a foul ball in the Angels’ dugout during the top of the sixth inning of their 6-4 loss to the Nationals in Anaheim.

The 28-year-old was looking out toward the field when he saw a ball off Jeimer Candelario’s bat zooming in his direction and managed to avoid getting hit as the ball rattled around the dugout.

He appeared to say “s–t” after dodging a disaster.

Ohtani finished the night 0-for-3 with a walk.

Angels owner Arte Moreno, who in January decided not to sell the team after exploring the possibility, told The Post’s Jon Heyman in February that he hopes to re-sign Ohtani, who could command upward of $500 million.

“He’s one of a kind, He’s a great person. He’s obviously one of the most popular baseball players in the world, and he’s an international star,” Moreno said. “He’s a great teammate. He works hard. He’s a funny guy, and he has a really good rapport with fans.”

In 10 games at the plate this season, Ohtani is hitting .306 with a 1.030 OPS, three home runs and eight RBIs.

He had allowed one run in 12 innings with 18 strikeouts over his first two starts, and he’s scheduled to make his third start Tuesday night in the second game of the Angels’ three-game set against Washington.

During his last start against the Mariners, Ohtani committed two violations of the new pitch-clock rules, one on the mound and one while he was batting.
