Shinji Mikami to Leave Tango Gameworks After 13 Years

Famed game developer Shinji Mikami, well known for directing the original Resident Evil and The Evil Within, is leaving Tango Gameworks after 13 years.

Confirmed in a tweet from Bethesda (below), Mikami will be leaving the studio — which he founded in 2010 — in the coming months.

“We can confirm that Shinji Mikami has decided to leave Tango Gameworks in the coming months,” the post said. “We thank him for his work as a creative leader and supportive mentor to young developers on The Evil Within franchise, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and, of course, Hi-Fi Rush.

“We wish Mikami-san well in the future and are excited by what lies ahead for the talented developers at Tango.”

No reason for his departure was given, and Mikami himself is yet to speak publicly about why he has chosen to leave Tango Gameworks or what he might do next.

The studio launched The Evil Within in 2014 before going on to make a sequel, with both games bearing a resemblance to classic Resident Evil games. Tango Gameworks then went on to make Ghostwire: Tokyo, an open world action adventure game (that still had spooky elements) that launched last year.

It also stepped away from horror for its latest game and surprise released Hi-Fi Rush in January 2023, an Xbox exclusive rhythm adventure game that quickly went viral. In our 9/10 review, IGN said: “Hi-Fi Rush marches to the beat of its own drum with stunning animation, loveable characters, and stylish rhythmic action that are anything but one-note.”
