Sheikh Jassim has allies fighting for Man Utd takeover behind the scenes
Sheikh Jassim is receiving help from Manchester United investors as he looks to buy the club, according to reports. The Qatari billionaire has made five offers for the Red Devils. However, it’s still unclear what the Glazers will decide as they continue to mull their options over at Old Trafford.
According to the Times, investors in the United A-shares have been ‘putting pressure on the board’s directors to opt for the Qatari bid’.
Sheikh Jassim is eager to secure 100 per cent control of the club, having made five offers so far.
And the Glazers are ‘believed to be trying to work through the issues on the board’.
It’s claimed the Americans still prefer the idea of Ratcliffe taking charge, despite the complexities involved.
Many United fans would be unhappy with that arrangement given it would likely see the Glazers stay, albeit in a reduced capacity.
He added: “Teams don’t come around very often. There are some special teams and the value of them tends to go up.
“The value of teams like this one is very special and rare – like art.
“I don’t think the world of sport will change that much in ten years.
“It is one of our key interests – get the lads in the pub and football is one of the two or three subjects we ever talk about.
“It’s football. We’ve worked really hard all our lives.
“Now we’ve made a bit of money so you’re allowed to have some fun, so long as it’s sensible economically.”
And Ratcliffe’s comments come after David Hellier, a journalist for Business, claimed the 70-year-old’s bid was ‘dead in the water’.
“For my part, I picked up on another aspect of this which was to do with the Ratcliffe side,” he told @Unitedviewtv last week.
“I was picking up from advisors to Man United that his bid, as things stand, is dead in the water.
“I mean absolutely dead in the water.
“And the reason for that is he’s proposing a structure that would buy out the Glazers, the majority shareholders, and not offer anything to the minority holders.
“The minority holders are slightly aggressive funds, mainly in the US there are some in the UK.
“I was told they’ve made it clear to the Manchester United board, via a letter that was sent, that said ‘if you recommend this offer which prejudices us, gives us no offer at all, we end up with discounted shares while the Glazers get everything. We will sue’.
“I was then being told by the Man United side that they have three independent directors.
“And those directors would never, ever sanction or recommend that bid under these circumstances with this threat.”
