Sheffield Wednesday issue plea after losing Lee Gregory’s mask in playoff drama

Sheffield Wednesday have put out a public appeal to help them find Lee Gregory’s protective face mask after the cover was lost in the aftermath of their dramatic playoff victory over Peterborough. Wednesday completed one of the most dramatic comebacks in EFL playoff history on Thursday after losing the first leg to Peterborough 4-0.

Darren Moore’s side levelled the tie up deep into stoppage time before winning on penalties, sparking wild celebrations around the ground. Fans poured onto the pitch to celebrate with the players, but it appears as though Gregory’s protective face mask went missing amid the chaos in the stadium.

Taking to social media, Wednesday put out a tweet hinting that Gregory would not be able to play in the playoff final next week without the mask. Their tweet began: “Can you help!?

“In the aftermath of our stunning comeback win on Thursday, Lee Gregory’s mask is missing! The custom-built protective cover was near the dugout.

“Due to a short turnaround, we cannot replace in time for next week. Any ideas where it might be!?”

Gregory suffered a broken cheekbone during training in the weeks prior to the playoffs starting. He ended up missing their final league game of the season against Derby, but was back in the side for the playoff first leg against Peterborough, sporting a custom-built face mask to protect his broken bone.

The 34-year-old then played a key role in helping Wednesday deliver one of the most dramatic comebacks in modern football history. He scored his side’s second of the game with a reactionary tap-in from close range with Liam Palmer ultimately scoring the equaliser deep into stoppage time.

Not long after extra time started, Gregory had his head in his hands after inadvertently heading the ball into his own net to put Peterborough back in control of the tie. But Callum Paterson saved Gregory’s blushes minutes later to send the playoff into a penalty shoot-out.

All of Wednesday’s penalty takers scored to send them through to the playoff final, where they will face Barnsley for a place in the Championship next season. But the Yorkshire side will be hoping they can find Gregory’s mask in time for the striker to feature at Wembley.
