While by her father’s side in the ICU, Shakira found out the devastating news of ex Gerard Piqué’s betrayal and confessed she didn’t think she would ‘survive’.
Shakira split with footballer Gerard, 36, after an 11-year relationship and although she appears to have moved on now, she was ‘consumed with sadness’ at the time.
When she needed her dad, William Mebarak Chadid, most, he flew out to see her but was involved in an accident which left him in the ICU.
The singer felt her world was ‘falling apart’ and couldn’t speak to her ‘best friend’ for advice on her painful split.
In a new interview, she shared her feelings during that turbulent time and revealed she found out ‘through the press’ about Gerard’s reported cheating while at her 91-year-old father’s bedside.
‘While he was at Milan’s first communion, he was gravely injured in an accident. Everything happened at once. My home was falling apart,’ she explained to People en Español.
She continued: ‘I was finding out through the press that I had been betrayed while my dad was in the ICU.’
‘The man I have loved the most in my life, my father, was leaving me when I needed him the most,’ she added. ‘I couldn’t talk to him, or go to my best friend for the advice I needed so much.’
Shakira shared that her father’s recovery had been ‘hard and slow’ but added that he is a ‘wonderful man and an endearing character who surprises us all with his strength.’
The Whenever Wherever singer and her ex went their separate ways last year and fans were gripped by rumours that Shakira had uncovered the affair through a jar of jam.
Fans believed the 46-year-old was suspicious of an affair when she came home to discover someone had eaten her strawberry jam.
It couldn’t have been their two children, Milan, 10, and Sasha, eight, or her ex as none of them liked the condiment.
Shakira has never confirmed this but the moment appears to be referenced in her music video, Te Felicito, which shows the head of her collaborator, Rauw Alejandro, inside a fridge.
Since her split last year, the Hips Don’t Lie singer has been swept up in a reported love triangle with Tom Cruise and Sir Lewis Hamilton.
The F1 star seems to have driven away the competition as a source shared they were in a ‘fun and flirty’ stage of dating.
Gerard on the other hand has been savaged by fans as he posted a picture of his new girlfriend, Clara Chia Martí, 24, on Instagram.
‘You’ll always be Shakira’s ex ????’, wrote one person – a message that was repeated by many.
