Spoiler warning for shadow and bone and potentially the latter books. Remember that everything said is my opinion and may not be  what you think.

Are you looking for a new book to read? Well if you are here is a book I would highly recommend you check out.

Shadow and bone is a novel written by Leigh Bardugo, which was first published in 2012. It is a riveting young adult fantasy, set in a magical Russian-esque land called Ravka. It follows Alina Starkov , a sun summoner, on a journey to understand her power and evade those who wish to use it.

It is the first book of the shadow and bone trilogy and is the first of the Grishaverse books.

It has lots of interesting characters, many of whom have the ability to control “the small science” and can therefore control water, air, fire, light, dark and materials.

It’s a story that has you engaged from the start with a relatable main character and lots of tense scenes. Though for me all the new vocabulary and places to learn  were puzzling at first, once you get a grip on it the story is captivating and you can’t wait to learn more about the world.

It’s a book that balances showing a fantasy world and a glimpse of our own extremely well, with scenarios seeming realistic. It touches on government and the ways that those in power sometimes use it to do things that harm others just to gain even more power.

The villain of the story isn’t always clear, meaning you are kept interested. I sat for several hours unable to put the book down!

You may know that there is now a Netflix TV show based on this series of books, called Shadow and bone. I think that this is also great though it differs slightly from the books as it sort of combines the shadow and bone trilogy with the six of crows duology. If you are a fan of the books already you will probably like the show. If you’ve seen the show the books will, as said, be slightly different but just as good, so definitely worth the read.

I personally think that it is a fantastic story, and is good to read on its own or as a way of starting the whole series. I really enjoyed this book, it’s original and fun whilst also having darker undertones about politics and control.

Overall I really love this book and the rest of the series. I think that it’s a great read and highly recommend it to you all!
