Sergio Aguero and Man City chairman react to new Etihad statue

Sergio Aguero reminisced about his career at Manchester City as the club unveil a statue in honour of his contribution.

Aguero spent a decade at the Etihad and left as the club’s record goalscorer and the deadliest finisher in Premier League history, winning five league titles during his time including the first one won in the most dramatic circumstances as his 94th-minute winner completed an astonishing turnaround on the final day of the season to win City their first Premier League – at the expense of biggest rivals United.

City commissioned artist Andy Scott to immortalise fellow club legends Vincent Kompany and David Silva after their respective departures in 2019 and 2020 for their roles in making the Blues the dominant force in English football. And the same sculptor has now installed the third and final part of his project with the iconic image of Aguero spinning his shirt around his head on display outside the East Stand.

“Truthfully, it is a very beautiful thing for me,” said Aguero. “In those ten years I was able to win a lot of trophies and was able to help the club become one of the most important in the world.

“I am very grateful to the club for making this statue in recognition of my football career in Manchester. It is something very special. I remember I was very young, to see myself ten years ago is very moving.”

City are making the ten-year anniversary of their first league title with a celebration event in the city centre on Friday night where many of the 2011/12 squad will be present. The club have gone from strength to strength since, and as well as closing in on a fourth title in five years they have agreed a deal in principle to sign Erling Haaland from Dortmund to attempt to replace Aguero.

For chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak, that moment of magic from their Argentine superstar when they needed him most was the catalyst for all the success that has followed.

“It’s the moment that I think, changed everything,” he said. “If you look at the ten years since, that was the moment that introduced what lies ahead. He is absolutely deserving, and I think, a legend for this club.

“These players, Vincent Kompany, David Silva and now Sergio Aguero, represents a type of football that is enjoyable, that is beautiful on the eye, that is effective and that brought with it a lot of trophies.”
