Secret Invasion Takes Winter Solider’s Thriller Style ‘A Step Further’

The MCU’s Secret Invasion series aims to take the “paranoid thriller” feel of Captain America: The Winter Solider “a step further,” according to producer Jonathon Schwartz.

“The Winter Soldier certainly gave us a lot of confidence that we could tell a story in that space that felt more like a paranoid thriller,” Schwartz told Total Film magazine (via GamesRadar). “Secret Invasion takes that a step further, and you really get to dig into Nick [Fury]. It becomes much more character-focused in a way that I really love.”

Series director Ali Selim also spoke to how Secret Invasion differs from past MCU shows and movies: “The first conversations I had [with Marvel] were, ‘Nobody flies in the air in the show,'” he said. “I realized, ‘Yeah, they’re doing something very different, and that’s exciting.'”

Marvel’s willingness to delve into a grittier, more serious subgenre of superhero movies with Winter Solider led IGN to name it the best MCU movie from Phases 1–3.

Secret Invasion debuts the first of its six episodes on June 21, exclusively on Disney+. Here’s the official synopsis from Marvel:

“In Secret Invasion, set in the present-day MCU, Fury learns of a clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls. Fury joins his allies, including Everett Ross, Maria Hill, and the Skrull Talos, who has made a life for himself on Earth. Together they race against time to thwart an imminent Skrull invasion and save humanity.”

Samuel L. Jackson leads the cast as Nick Fury. He’s joined by Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, Emilia Clarke as G’iah, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Olivia Colman as Sonya Falsworth, and Kingsley Ben-Adir as Gravik.
