Seb Korda claims he’s a Wimbledon ‘favourite’ in threat to Novak Djokovic

Sebastian Korda has thrown himself right into the mix of Wimbledon favourites after reaching the Queen’s quarter-final. The American had a stellar start to the season and held championship point against Novak Djokovic in Adelaide before getting sidelined with a wrist injury. Now back near his best, Korda claimed he was one of the title contenders at SW19, where Djokovic will be trying to win his 24th Major.

Korda is back into another quarter-final in just his fourth tournament since coming back from a wrist injury. The world No 32 defeated compatriot Frances Tiafoe on Wednesday, who came into Queen’s fresh off the back of winning the Stuttgart title and making his top 10 debut.

The 22-year-old will now face Cameron Norrie – his second home opponent of the week after beating Dan Evans in the first round. But Korda already has one eye on Wimbledon as he named himself as one of the title favourites with the grass-court Grand Slam just over a week away.

Asked whether he thought he had the right game for the surface, Korda said: “Yeah, I do. I’m very confident in myself on the grass court. I move really well and definitely have a game that not very many people have.”

The American has only made it as far as the fourth round at the All England Club, with that run coming back in 2021. And he’s not just trying to go one better this time around – he is ready to win the title.

“I’m an aggressive player, I like to come to the net, I have good hands, and I definitely feel as if I’m one of the favourites at Wimbledon,” Korda added. It comes as a threat to Djokovic, who is bidding to win a record 24th Grand Slam title.

The Serb already captured the men’s record of 23 at the recent French Open and is the heavy favourite to pick up another trophy at Wimbledon, where he is a seven-time champion. Djokovic hasn’t lost a match at SW19 since 2017.
