‘Screaming at him’: Resurgent star’s ‘crazy’ ace

Rickie Fowler’s resurgence continues, with his 10th place finish at the Phoenix Open highlighted by a final-round hole-in-one.

Fowler’s 6-iron found the hole at the 216-yard seventh hole, his third ace on the PGA Tour and first since 2015.

Once regarded as a near-certainty to win multiple majors, the 34-year-old fell out of the world’s top 150 in 2022.

Two top-10 finishes late in 2022 paved the way for an improved 2023, he’s now finished 11th and 10th in his last two starts.

His final round playing partner, Australia’s Jason Day, has been through similar struggles in recent years.

“I understand what he’s going through,” Day said.

“I think he understands what I’m going through as well. So it’s nice to see him playing some really good golf because for a moment there both of us weren’t playing great. I don’t think our head space was in the best of shape.

“Sometimes you feel like — you’re playing against the best players in the world, but sometimes it’s just you don’t believe in yourself and you kind of lose trust in your ability.”

Fowler hasn’t won on the PGA Tour since the 2019 Phoenix Open, but Day noted that even as Fowler struggled for form, he remained a fan-favourite.

“It’s nice to be able to see him back playing some really good golf. Because I played 18 holes with him today and he was definitely the favourite pretty much around the whole golf course,” he said.

“Every hole they’re screaming at him.

“But very rarely do you see a hole-in-one as well. It was nice to be able to see him hole out because obviously when he holes out they’re going to go even crazier. “

Scottie Scheffler regained the world No.1 ranking after shooting a final round 65 to score a two-shot victory over Canada’s Nick Taylor.

Day finished fifth, seven shots off the pace.
