Scott’s ‘impossible’ bogey after 32m tee shot
Adam Scott remains right in contention for a drought-breaking win on the PGA Tour, and will start his final round of the Wells Fargo Championship in North Carolina in a tie for third, five shots off the lead.
Scott shot a 5-under 67 in the third round, but will no doubt rue a wayward tee shot on the par-4 18th that struck a tree and finished 32m in front of him.
He would make bogey – one of only two blemishes for the round.

“I tried to cut one off the creek and I pulled it and it hit the tree right off the tee and just dropped in front of the tee box,” he said after the round.
“It’s a long par-4 that way.”
Leader Wyndham Clark carded an 8-under 63 to sit 16-under, with a two shot lead back to Xander Schauffele.
Scott is tied for third with Tyrrell Hatton at 11-under.
Clark is chasing his first PGA Tour win.
“I’m excited to see how I handle the pressure,” Clark said. “It’s going to be a fun challenge. Obviously it’s going to be tough, I have one of the best players in the world right behind me and a bunch of other good players. I’m just really looking forward to the challenge tomorrow.”
At one point during the third round there were 11 players tied for the lead.
Then Clark stepped on the course and shot 31 on the front nine, before birdies at 13, 14 and 15. He hit his first 17 greens before his approach shot on No.18 landed on the fringe, less than 10cm off the green.
Despite the setback on the final hole, Scott said he believes his third round was his best of the week.
“I hit some fairways today and that was nice because I hadn’t seen them yet. I thought I played really solid, the kind of round you’d want.
“But when the guy’s leading and he lights it up, [you’re] left searching a little bit, like ‘what do I need to do?’.
“I think the course was gettable today, the tee boxes were up and the pins were kind of in the ‘go’ zone, so we’ll see how they set it up tomorrow.”
