Gregor Townsend has warned England his decision to pick Ben White over Ali Price as scrum-half for their Six Nations clash highlights Scotland’s strength in depth.
British & Irish Lion Price, a mainstay under Townsend, does not even make the bench but has been tipped to bounce back strongly by his coach, who was quick to sing the praises of in-form London Irish man White. Townsend said of the dilemma: ‘It shows the level of competition, not just in that position but lots of positions.
‘We have gone for players in really good form. Ben’s been really consistent ever since he came into our squad. He’s started the majority of games for London Irish this year.
‘His kicking game is outstanding, he’s very competitive and he’s grown in confidence, so there’s someone in form who can play the game we want to play.’
Price is one of four 2021 Lions who have failed to make the team, with Chris Harris on the bench and Zander Fagerson and Hamish Watson missing on fitness grounds.
Townsend added: ‘Non-selection can motivate you in two ways – it can get you more disappointed or it can give you a reaction.’
