School celebrates record GCSE success

Students at a Chingford school overcame the disruption of the Covid pandemic to achieve record results.

Almost 60 per cent of students at West Hatch High School, Chigwell, achieved a Grade 5 or above in English and maths

Many students have been able to progress into the West Hatch Sixth Form.

Head teacher Daniel Leonard was delighted with the results.

He said: “Similarly to our Year 13 students, our Year 11s have overcome adversity and achieved great things this year.

“Their last ‘normal’ school year was Year 8 and yet they have achieved success well beyond what we could have imagined.

“I am so incredibly proud of our students and so happy I will get to see so many of them flourish further over the next two years in the sixth form.

“I’d like to wish all of our students huge congratulations and personally thank our staff for their hard work and dedication.”

Top performers include:

  • Aaron Gelkoff received nine grade 9s, two grade 8s, one starred distinction and one A*.
  • Emma Basco received six 9s, three 8s, one starred distinction, one distinction, one A* and one A.
  • James Kelliher received five 9s, five 8s, one 7 and one A*.
  • Stella Georgiou received six 9s, three 8s, two 7s, one distinction, one A* and onew A.
  • Danny Roach received seven 9s, three 8s, two distinctions and one A*.
  • Crystal Nunez received five 9s, five 8s, one 7, one distinction* and one A.
  • Matthew Sandy received five 9s; four 8s, one 7, one 6 and a distinction*.
  • Hasna Khan received one 9, seven 8s, two 7s, one 5 and one distinction*.
  • Andy Mulimbo had one 9, seven 8s, two 7s, one 5, one distinction* and one A.
  • Neslihan Sahin received three 9s, four 8s, three 7s, one 6 and one distinction.
  • Emily MacArthur received two 9s, six 8s, one 7, two 6s, one distinction and one A.
  • James Stevens received three 9s, four 8s, one 7 and three 6s.

The school’s sixth form open evening for entry into Year 12, 2023 will take place on Thursday, November 17.
