Save time, money and cut food waste with The Batch Lady’s new cookbook

‘When buying meat, fish and even cheese, there are often cheaper alternatives and budget-friendly cuts that taste just as good.’

Try these:

Beef

Try beef shin which is great for stewing (Picture: Getty)

Beef shin: Great for stewing, braising or using for pulled beef

Spalebone/Featherblade: Delicious way to enjoy a steak on a budget. Can also be diced and used in stews.

Brisket: Perfect for pot roasts, cooked low and slow.

Lamb

Minced lamb is versatile and good for things such as meatballs (Picture: Getty)

Shoulder: Slow cooked as a roasting joint, pulled or diced for casseroles.

Minced lamb: For meatballs, burgers, shepherd’s pie and koftas.

Lamb shanks: Slow cooked or roasted in a covered pot.

Pork

Gammon: Delicious roasted and for sandwiches

Pork belly: Wonderful slow-cooked or stuffed.

Cheese

Parma Reggiano is a cheaper alternative to Parmesan cheese (Picture: Getty)

Parma Reggiano or Grana Padano: Much cheaper than ‘proper’ Parmesan, but have the same salty, umami flavour.

Fish

Hake makes a good substiture for haddock (Picture: Getty)

Coley instead of cod

Trout instead of salmon

Sea cat instead of monkfish

Swordfish instead of tuna

Fruit, veg and herbs

Frozen veg is cheaper than fresh and can taste just as good -and sometimes better (Picture: Getty)

Frozen fruit, veg and herbs are around 20 per cent cheaper than fresh, and are packed and frozen within 30 minutes of being picked. They are also already peeled and chopped and you can use just what you need, minimising food waste. If buying fresh, look out for boxes of ‘wonky’ fruit and veg at a cheaper price – they taste just as good!

Drop a brand

Pricier products aren’t necessarily better (Picture: Getty)

Most supermarkets offer four product tiers: premium or luxury, branded, own-branded and value branded. Just because something costs more, doesn’t mean it’s better, especially with tinned tomatoes, herbs, sauces, flour, canned vegetables and frozen fruit and veg.
