Sandman’s Nightmare Country Appears to Debut a Grotesque Version of Corinthian

A new nightmare emerges in the first issue of DC’s The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country.

DC has provided CBR with an official preview for The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country #1, which is set to hit comic shops this coming Tuesday, April 12. The comic comes from writer James Tynion IV, artist Lisandro Estherren, colorist Patricio Delpeche and letterer Simon Bowland. Issue #1 also features a nightmare dream sequence from guest artist Yanick Paquette and guest colorist Nathan Fairbairn.

The preview itself finds a young woman attending a party, during which she discusses the dreams — and nightmares — she had as a child and as a teenager. Amongst the crowd, she spots a grotesque living nightmare who, much like the notorious Corinthian, appears to have mouths for eyes. However, it’s unclear if this is a new form of the Corinthian or, perhaps more likely, the dangerous nightmare he has been tasked with hunting down.

  • Sometimes, nightmares walk the Earth. Every night when you sleep, the Lord of Dreams chooses the path you’ll follow…into a sylvan Elysium, or down the hallways of your darkest fears. And sometimes, if it is Dream’s will, those nightmares escape those halls, and go out into the world. But it is not a choice he makes lightly.
  • Today the Corinthian walks the Earth again. The most feared of all Dream’s nightmares, his ravenous mouths have made him a legend among serial killers. Letting the Corinthian out among mortals is the most dangerous thing Dream could possibly do. But he has no choice—because there is another nightmare walking the Earth, one that must be hunted…and this monster is one that Dream, lord of all nightmares, did not make.
  • Horror-comics superstar James Tynion IV has waited his whole career to pay tribute to the mythos of The Sandman, the work that made him the writer he is today—and that time has come! Designed to welcome new readers into one of the greatest worlds in DC’s library, The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country is a terrifying travelogue through a nation recognizable and obscene, which will show you things seen in no Sandman series ever before—with spectacular art by Lisandro Estherren (Redneck, Strange Skies Over East Berlin) and “nightmare” sequences by comics art all-stars, starting with the incredible Yanick Paquette!

Created by Neil Gaiman and Mike Dringenberg, the Corinthian first appeared in 1989’s Sandman #10. The Corinthian is a walking nightmare created by Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams. In Nightmare Country, “the Corinthian walks the Earth again. The most feared of all Dream’s nightmares, his ravenous mouths have made him a legend among serial killers. Letting the Corinthian out among mortals is the most dangerous thing Dream could possibly do. But he has no choice — because there is another nightmare walking the Earth, one that must be hunted…and this monster is one that Dream, lord of all nightmares, did not make.”

Nightmare Country is a new ongoing series. Its opening story arc is described as a thematic sequel to The Doll’s House, the second story arc of the original Sandman series. (This is fitting, as The Sandman‘s third story arc is titled Dream Country.) “I spent my teenage years reading and rereading the volumes of The Sandman, trying to absorb all of their secrets,” Tynion said when the comic was announced. “The series taught me that anything and everything was possible in the comic book medium, and set me on the inexorable path of becoming a comic book writer.”

Written by James Tynion IV, illustrated by Lisandro Estherren and Yanick Paquette, colored by Patricio Delpeche and Nathan Fairbairn and lettered by Simon Bowland, The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country #1 goes on sale April 12 from DC.
