Samsung’s cool 10x zoom camera could return on Galaxy S23 Ultra

TL;DR

  • Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Ultra will reportedly pack a 10MP 10x periscope camera.
  • This is the same camera seen on the Galaxy S21 Ultra and S22 Ultra.

Samsung debuted a 10x 10MP periscope camera on the Galaxy S21 Ultra last year, delivering a notable image quality boost for long-range zoom. The company would retain this camera for the Galaxy S22 Ultra while using improved software.

Now, Galaxy Club reports that the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra will use a 10MP 10x periscope camera too. The outlet speculated that Samsung could improve image quality in other ways even if it’s using the same 10x camera. This is indeed true as the Korean brand could theoretically improve image processing, offer a higher quality lens/lens coating, or use a wider aperture to deliver better pictures.

Nevertheless, former Android Authority reviewer Eric Zeman thought the 10x periscope camera delivered decent results in his Galaxy S22 Ultra review. And I was pretty pleased with the 10x shots and videos when I got my hands on the phone for a few weeks earlier this year. So we’re definitely looking forward to seeing what Samsung can deliver with the next Ultra phone.

Galaxy Club wasn’t able to confirm whether the S23 Ultra would offer a second zoom camera as we’ve seen on the previous two Ultra phones. However, it stands to reason that the 3x camera will return, allowing for higher quality images at short or intermediate zoom ranges.

Either way, Huawei and Samsung are the only companies offering 10x periscope cameras right now, so we hope more companies hop on the bandwagon.
