Samsung Upgrade Program: What you should know

Samsung has revealed its latest range of foldable phones, which hit UK stores in the coming weeks. Fresh to the Galaxy Z range are the Flip 5 and Fold 5. Both arrive on August 11th packed with new features and useful upgrades.

For those who don’t know, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 includes a giant tablet-like main display that folds like a paperback book, longer battery life, an improved Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, and a thinner design.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 boasts a new front-facing screen, dubbed Flex Window, that’s a generous 3.4-inch (much larger than the 1.9-inch display found on the previous generation).

As always, these cutting-edge upgrades come with top-tier prices. The cheapest Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 still costs a hefty £1,749, while the most affordable Galaxy Z Flip 5 starts at £1,049, which can really leave a dent in your ISA.

Another affordable way to make the upgrade to the latest generation of Samsung devices is the Samsung Upgrade Programme, which spreads the cost of the handset into smaller monthly payments. When the next Galaxy Z phone is announced, Samsung allows those signed-up for the scheme to hand over their existing handset and walk away with the brand-new device.

Want to know how the scheme works, or are you already a member looking to switch to the newly-announced Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5? Below, we’ve got everything you need to know about the Samsung Upgrade Programme. Scroll down for the complete guide, or click on the links above to jump to the relevant section.

The Samsung Upgrade programme allows fans to pay for the latest Galaxy smartphones in monthly payments, with the option to upgrade to a new handset every year.

To sign-up for the scheme, you’ll need to enter a credit agreement with Samsung via finance broker Klarna, which is interest-free so you don’t have to worry about paying more than you usually do for a new phone. After the first 12 months of the interest-free scheme, you’ll be given the choice to either continue with the repayments until you’ve paid off the full cost of the device, or hand-in your current smartphone and enter a new agreement to upgrade to the latest Galaxy handset from Samsung.

With the release of the new Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 coming on August 11, you can sign-up for the Samsung Upgrade Programme for either phone ahead of their release.

\However, the Samsung Upgrade programme doesn’t come with a SIM that includes data or phone calls, so in order to use the phone, you’ll have to buy a SIM card from a provider like Vodafone or Sky to use it to its full capability.

When you choose either phone you want, you pay 10 per cent of the price upfront then you pay 23 interest-free instalments and then a 24th final instalment – which is larger than the 23 instalments – in order to keep the phone.

So for example, if you want the 256GB Galaxy Z Fold5 you would pay an upfront payment of £174.90 then 23 monthly instalments of £53.23 then a final repayment of £349.80.

But if you don’t want to keep the device, you can choose to swap the phone and return it to Samsung for exchange of a new phone at any time between months 12 and 24.

If you’re already part of the Samsung upgrade programme, you must send your old Galaxy device within 7 days of receiving your new Galaxy device.

However, you must be over the age of 18 to purchase a phone through Samsung’s upgrade programme and you must make repayments in accordance with your credit agreement.
