Design and Size
Hello me, meet the future me
From the very beginning, the Galaxy Z Fold series has had this weird external screen, where it’s way too tall and way too narrow. Early rumors said that the Z Fold 5 might be upgrading that, but alas. Every bit of believable data we have now says that it will repeat the 23:9 aspect ratio. It’s fine for checking notifications, appointments, notes, and doing some quick replies. But if you want to hold the phone with two hands and thumb-type on it, you will feel compelled to unfold it.
OK, how will the Galaxy Z Fold 5 be different, if at all? Well, for one, it should have a different hinge design. Now thinner and maybe lighter, it should accomplish two things — even out that crease that goes through the center of the internal screen, and also make sure that the Z Fold 5 closes down fully. With no gap between be bases of its “wings”.
Of course, we will also get a new color — the Z Fold 5 is said to come in black, beige, and light blue. The Z Fold 4 was available in black, beige, and green (“graygreen”).
As for accessories in the box — we are living the minimalistic lifestyle here in Premium Phone Land. That means you will get a phone and a data cable in the box.
Performance and Software
The new Snapdragon has been tuned up
OK, so we have a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 up against a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. And that’s not the end of it — the Gen 2 is where Samsung started getting these special “Made for Galaxy” units.
Basically, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is slightly overclocked — 3.36 GHz vs 3.2 GHz on regular model. The old Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 that’s kicking inside the Galaxy Z Fold 4 still ticks at 3.19 GHz, so… we wouldn’t say you will see a great difference in performance.
Camera
Photograph me like one of your folding girls
Not much is expected to change on the photo front. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 had an adequate camera — nothing intense like the 100x zoom of the Galaxy S22 Ultra, its large sensors and apertures. But the Z Fold 4 camera was definitely in the flagship range — just not as good as phones that are dedicated to that.
Now, the Z Fold 5 is said to have a 50 MP main camera — same resolution as before, but a bigger sensor — 12 MP 3x zoom camera, which is an upgrade from the old 10 MP, and a 12 MP ultra-wide camera, which is the same spec on the Z Fold 4.
Nothing is said about the selfie cameras, so we will assume 10 MP on the outside and an under-screen 4 MP selfie camera on the inside.
In general, we don’t expect huge improvements with the Z Fold 5 camera — maybe slight updates, slightly better low-light performance, especially if the main sensor really is bigger. But nothing to wow you or make you throw away the Z Fold 4 and go for the 5. Or so we think.
Audio Quality and Haptics
The Galaxy Z Fold phones have great stereo speakers with a wide sound, detailed mids, sweet highs, and a good amount of base. We really love the ones in the Z Fold 4, so even if the Z Fold 5 is a repeat of that, we’d be fine. But hey, if Samsung can squeeze more volume or more bass from those tiny drivers, we’d be all for it.
Battery Life and Charging
It will be down to the components
The Galaxy Z Fold 4 has a 4,400 mAh cell and it is said that the Z Fold 5 will pack the same juicebox. Understandable, there’s only so much space within one of the phone’s halves — we are kind of impressed we can even get the 4,400 batteries.
So, in terms of battery life? The Z Fold 5 may still get a slight upgrade here. Both the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 are built on a 4 nm process, OK. But, the UFS 4.0 storage that’s expected to be in the Z Fold 5 is actually 40% more energy-efficient than the UFS 3.1… and that’s on top of it being twice as fast.
In terms of charging, we don’t expect any jumps to the crazy-fast charging that some other companies are doing. So, 25 W on the wire, up to 15 W wireless with a compatible puck.

Now that we’ve talked about how same-y we expect the Z Folds to be, here’s a table of the cold hard specs (as far as we know what to expect, that is):

*speculation
So, yeah, when we put it like that we can see that the Z Fold 5, while an awesome phone, will probably not completely replace the Z Fold 4 — an already awesome phone.
